Lakha mandal- Mythical Ruins- 25km

Step back in time with a visit to Lakhamandal, an ancient temple site nestled in the Jaunsar-Bawar region, just 25 km from our resort in Barkot. This historic village is steeped in Mahabharata legends and is believed to be the site of the infamous Lakshagriha (House of Lac) that the Kauravas built to trap the Pandavas. The word ‘Lakha’ means lakh (hundred thousand), and ‘Mandal’ refers to temples, suggesting the once-massive scale of this site.

At the heart of Lakhamandal lies a beautiful Shiva temple complex adorned with intricate stone carvings, ancient Shivlings, and secret tunnels. One of the most fascinating aspects is the huge graphite Shivling, which shines when water is poured over it—a marvel that leaves visitors in awe. As you walk around the premises, you’ll also encounter sculptures of Hindu deities and guardian figures that reflect early North Indian temple architecture.

What makes Lakhamandal more intriguing is its spiritual atmosphere. Many locals and priests believe the temple holds powerful energies, and stories of ancient rituals and hidden chambers still circulate among the villagers. It’s not just a destination for religious pilgrims but also a paradise for history enthusiasts, archaeology lovers, and photographers.
